BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- A National Transportation Safety Board member says a preliminary investigation of the deadly crash of a UPS cargo plane in Alabama indicates the pilot and co-pilot did not make any distress calls prior to impact.

Robert L. Sumwalt also told a news conference Wednesday that because the tail of the A300-600F aircraft is still smouldering, investigators haven't been able to gain access yet to the cockpit-voice and flight-data recorders.

Sumwalt said investigators will be on the scene for a number of days.
