Father and three-year-old daughter die in hospital after Pickering crash

Police say a man an child were outside of their vehicle when they were hit by another vehicle at Taunton and Brock roads in Pickering.

A father and his three-year-old daughter who exited their vehicle after being involved in a crash in Pickering Tuesday night were struck by another vehicle and died in hospital, police say.

Police said a 40-year-old Pickering man and his daughter were travelling northbound on Brock Road at approximately 7:50 p.m. in a Honda when they turned left onto Taunton Road and struck a Nissan that was travelling southbound through the intersection on a green light.

While the investigation is still ongoing, police said it appears the Honda was at fault.

The father and daughter left the scene, police said, and continued travelling westbound for 350 metres before they drove off the roadway and struck a guardrail before coming to rest in a ditch.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Const. Nicholas Gluckstein said the Honda was badly damaged after the crash.

“I can tell you there was significant damage to the Honda, and the airbags had been deployed,” he said. The extent of their injuries at that time is unclear, but Gluckstein said police will review post-mortem and toxicology reports as the investigation unfolds.

The father then got out of the vehicle and carried his daughter back up to the roadway. As they attempted to cross Taunton Road, they were struck by a BMW that was headed westbound.

Police said both the father and daughter suffered life-threatening injuries and were transported to hospital, where they later died. Gluckstein noted the road where the second collision occurred is dimly lit and may have been a contributing factor.

“Potentially, the occupants of that vehicle were walking back to the initial collision site to speak with the second driver, however, we don’t have that confirmed.”

Police said the initial crash was reported as a hit-and-run as the driver of the Honda did not remain at the scene. As officers were responding, the second collision occurred.

The driver of the Nissan sustained minor injuries and transported to hospital. The driver of the BMW also sustained minor injuries and was assessed by paramedics at the scene. No charges are being considered by police at this time.

Anyone who was in the area at the time of either collision is asked to contact police at 905-579-1520 ext. 5226.
